Social sites are for their name should be for socializing with people. This means we should not only use it for the sake of our selves (marketing, popularity, etc) but should be for the sale of connection, commitment, and mutual benefits.

Susan,

First, it was great to see you last month at the Inbound Marketing Summit in SF. What a pleasant surprise!

Second, AMEN! I really like how you've framed the conversation and the fact that you are reinforcing the "fish where the fish are" concept. When people like my wife (who has become surprisingly socially savvy) are spending 10+ hours a week on FB, that's a good indication that businesses should start thinking about how to tackle engaging with those consumers.

One thing that I've been bullish on recently because of it's ability to help businesses tap into the power of Facebook is Facebook Connect. FB Connect is not mutually exclusive of the goodness of Facebook -- including fan pages -- but it does give businesses a relevant way to gently interrupt people's conversations without feeling intrusive.

Thanks for giving me some good fodder to start the day!

Best,
Aaron

While I agree that Facebook might always be around, I don't know that its dominance will be for as long as your post intimates. MySpace and Friendster are perfect examples how quickly the crowd and a business' costumers can move away to the next best thing.

In fact, I read recently that for the first time, Facebook's core demographic (aged 18-25) has actually declined in usage, and most of the growth now comes from foreign traffic and older demographics. This would seem to show that their central market is in fact leaving because they are not as engaged as Facebook claims. Instead of this engaging phenomenon, I think Facebook will become a modern Whitepages that allows us to connect with acquaintances, and will possibly provide some advertising opportunities as well.

The best reference I know to the phrase "childish things" is the Bible, from the ever popular-for-weddings 1 Corinthians.

One thing I've found with a lot of people I've encountered is hesitance to move to yet another social network. After the "Everyone's using Friendster, no, now MySpace, no, now Facebook" trend, the rise of Twitter is seen as the next thing, and I get the feeling that people are tired of moving around.

However, I use FB and Twitter at the same time; my social network on FB isn't going anywhere, and I wouldn't give it up for Twitter (nor would any of my contacts who responded to my totally non-scientific poll of tweeting "Would you give up FB for Twitter?"). I think that, for a company, it is important to be where the customers are; in that respect, if you want to have a social media front, definitely use Facebook; however, that does not have to keep you from also having a presence on some of the more early-adopter technologies such as Twitter.
