What do you think about Al’s pre-release marketing so far? Two free song downloads, two online videos… It’ll be interesting to see if it has a positive effect on album sales.

Well, Weird Al has always been about viral marketing, even before most marketing and PR agencies knew how to spell WOM, so it is not surprising to see him embrace social media tools like YouTube and MySpace.
Album sales? Casual listeners like me. Probably not. But, his fans will buy. And without doubt, he will pick up new fans who weren’t even born in the Dr. Demento era. In part because of the WOM marketing, but largely because White and Nerdy is a kick-ass song, full stop.
That’s what makes something viral — a compelling message for a quality product — not the tools we use.
